Jaisha’s Monthly Impact: October Programs in Action

We've had an exciting October at East John & White Sands Community Center in Lusby and the College of Southern Maryland, full of engaging activities and educational adventures. Here’s a look at some of the fantastic programs and classes that our youth have been participating in.

Clubs at East John & White Sands Community Center, Lusby

Our community centers have been buzzing with energy as students participated in a variety of activities incorporating movement and music. From Freeze Dance to Scavenger Hunts and Pictionary to Charades, there has been no shortage of fun and learning! Line Dancing, Simon Says, outdoor sport games, and a game called “Name That Tune – Pump It / Dump It” kept our kids on their toes and laughing together.

Social Skills Class at the College of Southern Maryland

One of our most impactful classes, Social Skills, focused on essential life skills through engaging activities: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

  • Island Survival Adventure Game: Students embarked on an adventurous game where they navigated the challenges of survival on a deserted island while learning about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. They also created their own pyramids of needs, which helped them understand human motivation and priorities.

  • Support Systems: This segment taught students to identify their support networks, including family and friends. They learned who to ask for help, the steps to take when people don’t listen, and how to strengthen their support systems.

  • What Working Together Involves: Using the book "Too Timid To Talk" by Lisa Regan, students participated in role-plays illustrating what to do and not to do during arguments. They also watched a clip from "Steven Universe" to see examples of effective communication and collaboration.

Study Skills Class

This class was packed with activities designed to enhance the students' learning strategies and self-awareness:

  • Learning Styles and True Colors Personality Quiz: Students explored the three primary learning styles—visual, auditory, and kinesthetic—and participated in the True Colors Personality Quiz. They then dove into Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences, creating posters to illustrate their unique learning styles and intelligences.

  • Motivation and Grit: Through a motivation assessment, and activities focused on grit and goal setting, students learned the importance of perseverance. The “Two Truths and a Goal” activity helped them set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals and craft a roadmap for their futures.

  • Vision Boards: To foster long-term planning and aspiration-setting, students created vision boards centered around their future dreams and goals. This creative exercise enabled them to visualize and stay motivated towards achieving their aspirations.

Movement & Music Integration

To keep the classes dynamic and engaging, we’ve incorporated movement and music into various activities. Whether it’s Freeze Dance to energize a session or Charades to build team spirit, these elements have proven to be a hit, providing a fun and interactive way to reinforce learning.

The enthusiasm and creativity of our students are truly inspiring. We're so proud of their hard work and look forward to more exciting adventures and achievements in the months ahead.
